Give each line a clear job

A practical setup is to label one line “Home” and the other with the travel destination. Use the travel line for mobile data. Decide independently whether the home line should remain on for calls or text messages.

Dual-SIM capability varies. A phone may store several profiles but allow fewer to be active at once. Check the exact device’s supported combination before assuming that two eSIM profiles can both stay enabled.

Messaging apps and SMS are not the same

An internet messaging app uses a data connection once its account is set up. A conventional SMS belongs to a mobile line. Adding a data-only plan does not turn it into an SMS service.

Avoid changing an app’s registered number just because you added a travel data line. Check the messaging service’s own account instructions if it prompts for a change or verification. If an account needs an SMS to your home number, make sure you have a supported way to receive it before leaving.

Check the home line’s charges separately

Choosing the travel eSIM for data does not cancel your home service or its charges. Read the carrier’s international terms for receiving calls, making calls, voicemail and texts. Wi-Fi calling also follows carrier and device rules; do not assume it makes all calls free.

If avoiding any use of the home line is your priority, turning that line off is clearer than leaving it active and guessing. The trade-off is that you may stop receiving calls or ordinary texts to it during that time.

A check before you travel

  1. Confirm that your device supports the two lines you want active.
  2. Label both lines so their purpose is obvious.
  3. Select the intended mobile data line and review automatic switching.
  4. Check your home carrier’s roaming conditions for voice and messages.
  5. Prepare an alternative account-recovery method where the service supports one.

Test the setup while help and a reliable connection are still easy to reach. After returning home, restore the home line as your preferred data line and disable travel profiles you no longer intend to use.
