Decide what you need during the connection
Write down the jobs that cannot wait: checking a flight change, contacting accommodation, arranging onward transport or reaching someone travelling separately. An airside connection with saved documents may have different needs from a stopover where you leave the terminal.
Check the airport’s current Wi-Fi arrangements if that is your planned connection, and save essential travel details before departure. Do not assume that an advertised airport connection will be available at every gate or when you need it. Mobile data can be a useful alternative, but this comparison is not a guarantee of reception inside a particular terminal.
Our offline preparation guide helps reduce the number of tasks that depend on a connection. Check border-entry and transit requirements separately if you intend to leave the airport; buying data does not establish permission to enter.
A dated example: Turkey stopover, then Japan
| Coverage option | Allowance | Validity | Price | Explore |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Turkey only | 1 GB total | 30 days | €0.36 | Plan details |
| Japan only | 1 GB total | 7 days | €0.43 | Plan details |
| Global, including Turkey and Japan | 1 GB total | 7 days | €4.69 | Plan details |
For each product above, we selected the lowest listed EUR price for 1 GB of total data with at least seven days of validity; equal prices favour longer validity. Prices and listed country coverage were checked on . Confirm the final price, exact coverage and conditions in Stellar eSIM before paying.
The Turkey entry buys 1 GB total for 30 days at €0.36; the Japan entry buys 1 GB total for 7 days at €0.43. These are not daily replenishing allowances. Each selected offer contains exactly 1 GB, so its displayed price is also its price per GB; that unit price does not make the coverage or validity identical. The global entry buys one 1 GB total allowance with 7 days of validity, usable across its listed covered countries, including Turkey and Japan.
A lower initial bill is only one part of the choice
The two local purchases cost €0.79 in total. They provide 2 GB combined, split into 1 GB for each country. Unused Turkey data is not a pool you can spend in Japan. The €4.69 global example provides only 1 GB altogether, but that allowance can serve either covered stop and its coverage extends beyond this two-country itinerary.
This is not a like-for-like provider ranking or a claim that local plans are always cheaper. It shows why a short transit stop deserves its own calculation. A different route, allowance or extra country can change the result. Compare the exact global plan with the actual local options, not the word “global” alone.
Count validity from the first covered connection
All three selected examples list the first supported network connection as the start of validity. A global plan that first connects during the Turkey stopover can therefore begin its seven-day period before the Japan part of the journey. Check whether that leaves enough time through the final day you need service.
The separate Japan order has its own start and expiry conditions. Follow its instructions rather than enabling several lines just to see which one connects. Include any return stopover in the calendar too; do not assume a plan used outbound remains valid for the journey home. The activation timing guide explains the checks to make before turning a travel line on.
Plan the line change before the busy part of the trip
If you choose local plans, label them clearly and keep the order instructions available. Confirm the phone can use another provider’s eSIM before purchase; see the carrier-lock checklist. Arrange the required setup connection before you are rushing between gates.
Apple normally requires Wi-Fi or a hotspot for eSIM setup, with exceptions for some models and regions. Installation and choosing the active data line are separate steps. Check your home carrier’s roaming terms as well; selecting travel data does not establish that every action on the home line is free.
Buy for the journey you will actually make
In Stellar eSIM, compare the stopover country, destination and any return connection. Choose and buy the plan or plans in the app, check the supplied installation instructions and use the app to follow the remaining allowance. Keep room in the budget for a disruption that adds time or changes the route.
For this example, the Turkey plans and Japan plans are separate purchases. If you choose one broader plan instead, check every country against that specific offer and verify the full travel period fits its validity. There is no need to buy wider coverage solely because the itinerary contains a connection.
